Richard J Aarden’s repertoire is filled with experimentations and collaborations that revealed him to be a very versatile singer-songwriter, unafraid to explore different musical worlds with his unique and distinctive songwriting style. The path he’s followed for his first self-titled album is in a way a consolidation of his musical journey. Sonically, the hybrid use of synthesis and acoustic elements always creates a whole new world where to dive in.
Each song is a musical comment of a moment, a place, of a nuance. Melodies are carefully written to highlight a selective yet efficient use of words.
Intricate textures, sometimes rich and sometimes minimal instrumentations quietly ask for the attention of the listener, who is instantly brought into a constant succession of tension and relief.
Richard J Aarden’s album is a patient search of freedom and every song is the bitter and sweet encounter that can be found along the way.

1. DD.MM.YY
one day
these days
a month
a while ago
a week
these weeks
and years and years
(and years and years)
4. SOMEWHERE I FEEL FREE PT.1
and then I’ll do it all over again
a little louder and brighter
and I will meet you in moments like this
floating weightless like feathers
And I will use all the time that I have
to find a place for my mess
I will breathe all the air that I can
to dive and tear down this hell
and then I’ll dine with those demons I know
and raise a glass to the lost ones
and I will wait for the sun to come up
to take me higher and higher
Oh I will search for more space
I’ll reckon with the waste
I belong in a boat out at sea
I belong somewhere I feel free
somewhere I feel free
7. VOICEMAIL
tell me what to do
let me hold on to something good
cause I’m still falling down
turning upside down
2. NOMADIC HEAD
nomadic head, my
swayer of aether
akin to my feet
roaming the fields
I’m so far off
nomadic head, my
sloppy companion
akin to my heart
no manual control
How long have I been away?
How long have I been away?
5. SOMEWHERE I FEEL FREE PT.2
8. WICKER
so it’s said it’s getting easier
so it’s said time fixes everything
so take it easy now, breathe in and out
the water’s warm, your kisses soap onto the skin
and it’s a sick majestic ritual
it’s a vicious, unrelenting blossoming
grab a shield, oh silver steel
as I’m standing here
oh my mind’s a battlefield
I may creak like a wicker chair
but I’m here and not afraid
for the sun’s high, my view’s wide
overcome
of this concrete you don’t know
oh you don’t know my blood
oh the fights that I have won
oh the fights that I have lost
oh the fights that I have…
3. WITH NO HANDS
shut me down, I’m way too far gone, there’s no return
pick me up, I think I’ve been here for way, oh way too long
help me out, if you find my head, unravel it.
Once again, I’m staggering home
and I can not feel my toes
So watch me now
with no hands
with no heart
with no head
So what is left?
What is left?
A couple bones beneath some stones
do you hear those tiny voices in your head that say
“why don’t you try again?”
[inaudible]
6. CAESAR*
what world lays at the end of the sea
I don’t know.
But every sea has another shore
and I will arrive.

*[CESARE PAVESE, “IL MESTIERE DI VIVERE” – 16 FEB 1936]

9. MAY YOU BE
may you find a place you can call yours
paint it with the colors you prefer
May you conquer all the things you seek
and find out what it matters, what you need
may you find some time, a little peace
a giant rug of grass beneath the leaves
if you know the bitter in defeats
you’ll better taste the joy in victories
